5 Questions Every Family Should Ask When Touring a Classical Christian School

October 19, 2026

Choosing a school for your child can feel like a lot to sort through. You can read the websites, compare programs, look at tuition, ask friends for recommendations, and still find yourself wondering, “What will my child’s experience at this school really be?”?”

At the end of the day, any parent wants to know what their child’s days will look like, who will be guiding them, and what kind of environment they’ll grow in year after year. The words “classical” and “Christian” can tell you something about a school’s philosophy, but they don’t tell you everything you need to know about how that philosophy shapes a student’s everyday experience.

5 Questions to Bring With You on a School Tour

A school tour gives you the chance to look a little closer. You can see the classrooms, meet the people who will teach your child, and observe how students interact.

You don’t need to arrive with a clipboard full of questions. A few thoughtful ones can open the door to a much more meaningful conversation. As you visit a classical Christian school, consider asking these five.

1. What Is the School’s Vision for Education?

Start with the big picture.

Every school has an idea of what education should accomplish, even if that philosophy isn’t always stated plainly. When you tour a classical Christian school, ask the school leaders to explain what they hope students will know, understand, and become by the time they graduate.

At Archē Classical Academy, education is rooted in the belief that Christ is Lord over every area of life. That means academics and faith are not treated as two separate pieces of a student’s education. Students are encouraged to pursue truth, goodness, and beauty as they study the world God created.

This also shapes the school’s approach to character. Academic achievement is valuable, but so are qualities such as humility, courage, self-discipline, honesty, and love of neighbor.

A good tour should give you a clearer picture of the kind of person the school hopes to help form, not just the kind of student it hopes to produce.

2. What Does Classical Education Look Like in the Classroom?

The word “classical” can mean different things to different families, so don’t be afraid to ask for specifics.

  • What does a typical lesson look like?
  • How do students learn to reason?
  • What role do discussion, writing, memorization, and primary sources play?
  • How does the curriculum change as students grow?

At Archē, the classical model develops alongside the student’s stage of learning. Younger students encounter stories, language, foundational knowledge, and the wonder of the world around them. As students mature, they move toward more advanced reasoning, discussion, and engagement with significant works and ideas.

The curriculum includes the traditional liberal arts while maintaining a distinctly Christian perspective. In the Logic years, for example, students learn to recognize sound reasoning and engage ideas carefully. Older students encounter the Great Books and participate in Socratic discussion, giving them opportunities to wrestle with important questions rather than simply memorize answers.

3. How Does the School Approach Character Formation?

This question can open up an important conversation. Ask how the school responds when a student struggles with self-control, conflict, dishonesty, discouragement, or responsibility. What expectations are in place? How do teachers guide students through mistakes?

At a Christian school, character formation should have a clear foundation. For Archē, that foundation is Scripture and the life and teachings of Jesus Christ.

Character is developed through ordinary moments throughout the school day. Students learn to listen when someone else is speaking, complete difficult work, take responsibility for their choices, show respect, and practice patience. Teachers have opportunities to reinforce these habits as students grow.

When you tour, pay attention to the interactions happening around you.

  • How do teachers speak to students?
  • How do students speak to one another?
  • Do you sense an environment where students are known, challenged, and cared for?

These observations can be just as helpful as reading a school’s list of values.

4. How Do Teachers Know Their Students?

A school’s philosophy only goes so far if students don’t have meaningful relationships with the adults teaching them.

Ask about class sizes, teacher-student relationships, communication with parents, and how teachers recognize when a student needs additional support or encouragement.

Our average class size is 16 students, creating space for teachers to know their students well. That can make room for conversation, discussion, individual attention, and the kind of relationships that are difficult to build in a crowded classroom.

You can also ask how teachers communicate with families and how parents are involved in the life of the school. A school tour should give you a sense of how the adults around your child work together.

5. What Kind of Community Are You Building?

Finally, ask about the people.

  • What does the school community value?
  • How are families involved?
  • What does community look like beyond the classroom?
  • How does the school welcome new families?

These questions can help you picture what life at the school might feel like for your entire family.

Our school community brings together students, parents, teachers, and staff around a shared commitment to Christian education. That community continues to grow as the school enters a new chapter in its home on Suncrest Drive and expands its program through 10th grade for the 2026–27 school year.

Of course, every family will look for something different. One family may prioritize academic rigor. Another may be looking for a strong sense of community. Another may want a school where faith shapes the entire educational experience.

The important thing is to ask questions that help you understand what daily life will look like for your child.
